Dig deeper into students’ need to belong, particularly students who have experienced trauma or perceive they don’t fit the dominant cultural narrative within their school community. Understand the importance of creating a culture of belonging and acceptance, particularly for students who perceive that their identity doesn’t match what is perceived as desirable, successful, powerful, or normal. Examine the effect of trauma and marginalization on learning. Then see the power that educators can wield when they intentionally create effective counter narratives to engage their most reluctant learners.
